Old oil painting on paper or panel, late 19th century to early 20th century   Old oil painting on paper or panel, late 19th century to early 20th century
Old oil painting on paper or panel dating from the late 19th to early 20th century in fair condition. This artwork represents Major Alexander Lafone, an officer of the British Army and recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for bravery in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Born in 1870 and died in 1917 in Palestine, based on the painting, one might think he was between 20 and 30 years old, which places the painting in the declared era.

The frame is wooden with a floral frieze decoration in good condition, except for a small accident on the side and some wear on the gilding (see photos). Regarding the painting, it can be noted that the oil has slightly curled (mainly on the face), which is not surprising for more than 120 years and its being under glass.

A beautiful piece of artwork representing a British war hero that is rarely found in paintings. The exterior dimensions of the frame are 55x44 cm. Please contact me for international shipping.
