It highlights a bush, most of whose leaves have been covered with thick layers of paint, partly hidden in its own shadow, in the middle of what is therefore the Fontainebleau forest. It is crossed here by a river overflowing with movement into which the multiple reflections of the elements in the background are thrown: rocks, other bushes, in red/orange tones, a superb contrast with the yellow and green hues of the main element of the composition, trees as thin as matches. A multitude of white areas, revealing the contents of the veiled sky, also constitute as many elements airing the scene and are largely responsible for the level of reflection with which the painter decided on the different placements of the elements of his composition, an indication of a talented artist, both in his ideas and in the pictorial quality of their executions.
The panel is in superb condition and is perfectly flat and straight. It is worth noting, on the painting itself, very slight losses at the upper edge (in the form of three brown spots and a small hole), slight traces here and there of an old frame, and two small black dots at the top right, at the level of the tree trunks.
