This is an early copy of the famous panel by Correggio, entitled La Madonna di San Girolamo or Il Giorno (Our Lady of Saint Jerome or The Day), dating from around 1528 and now preserved at the National Gallery of Parma. The subject of the representation is the presentation by Saint Jerome to Jesus of the translation of the Bible from Hebrew to popular Latin, a work that the saint carried out at the request of Pope Damase and that he completed while hiding in the solitude of the cave of Bethlehem.
