Antique religious painting from the 18th-19th century, oil on canvas. "Virgin MARY clothed with the sun, crowned with stars and surrounded by cherubs; Treading upon the serpent that represents evil, the Demon over the world." Iconography that depicts Mary trampling the ancient satanic serpent. The Virgin Mary crushes the serpent under her foot, holding the apple in its mouth, which was intended for Adam through Eve (symbolizing original sin, or the victory of good over evil, on earth). The passage from Genesis called "Protoevangelium" where God addresses the serpent: "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; she shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.
" The work of the artist (to be identified) is luminous and finely executed and is entirely original. Approximately 64 cm x 51 cm (without the frame). TO BE RESTORED (see photos).
Look at the numerous photos that are an integral part of the description where the defects are highlighted. It has already been mounted on another canvas that likely underwent a restoration prior to the mounting, considering the collages on the back. To best illustrate its condition, the photos taken of the back of the canvas were done against a window. So that the light brings out the defects!!! It is framed in its original gilded frame.
