Old Oil Painting on Canvas, 19th-Century Landscape. Peasant Washerwomen

  
63 x 49 cm / 25 x 20 in. Antique oil painting on canvas of a classic impressionist landscape in a bucolic or pastoral style, strongly reminiscent of the aesthetics of the Barbizon School (mid-19th century, following in the tradition of artists such as Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot or Jean-François Millet). The foreground shows two women, washerwomen or peasant women, busy at the water’s edge.

Near them, a basket and some light-colored laundry or bundles of wool can be seen. The middle ground and background: a large mass of dark, dense trees dominates the center of the composition. On the left, through the branches, a bright opening can be seen, evoking a sunset or the glow of dawn skimming the horizon (orange, pink, and yellow tones). The painting is enhanced by a carved gilded wooden frame from the 19th century.

It features elaborate moldings with leaf frieze motifs (laurel or acanthus leaves).
