Pierre-Jean Chaffrey was born on March 14, 1926, in Birmandreis, in what was still called the department of Algiers. After his classical secondary studies, he took Fine Arts courses in Algiers, then went to the United States for two years.
Returning to France in 1947, he settled in Nice, then in Allauch, near Marseille. It was in this city that his first private exhibition took place. Very quickly, his works tinged with surrealism were appreciated by many fans and critics. Over the years, Pierre-Jean Chaffrey's painting will gradually strip itself of its surrealist influences and its literary, philosophical or metaphysical sources.
But it is to penetrate more deeply the secrets of nature, the very essence of things. In 1966, Pierre-Jean Chaffrey set up his workshop in Perpignan.
He stayed there for thirteen years and created the first "Galerie de l'Olympe" while in Paris, his works were exhibited at the "L'Obsidienne" gallery, avenue Matignon, and at the "Bruno Martin Caille" gallery, rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré. In his quest for the Absolute, in this search for the Universal that he will pursue throughout his life, he addresses all themes: the sea, women, fruits, flowers, the landscapes of Roussillon, Provence, Brittany.
