Oil on canvas, framed (new golden frame for sale). Signed at the bottom left. Dimensions without frame: 47.3 x 38.9 cm.

Dimensions with frame: 57 x 48 cm. This painting comes from an art collector in Katwijk aan Zee, Netherlands. Good condition - Well preserved. Paintings by Martinus Schildt are very rare to find on the art market. Martinus Schildt was a great Dutch painter and draftsman, born and died in Rotterdam. Coming from a modest family, he started working at the age of 14 in the workshop of L. Nooijen, a lacquerer and art master in Rotterdam, while attending evening classes at the Academy of Visual Arts in the city. He became a student of Rein Miedena and Alexander Van Maasdijk there.

In 1893, he established himself as an independent artist with the support of a royal scholarship he received until 1897. In 1895, he won a silver medal at the Rotterdam Academy competition for his painting "Satisfaction".

His talent quickly attracted collectors: he excelled especially in interior scenes, portraits, and still lifes. He won a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition (which contributed to his international reputation) and a gold medal at the 1901 Munich International Exhibition. He exhibited in Rotterdam, The Hague, Amsterdam, Leeuwarden, and Spa during his lifetime. Unfortunately, his career was cut short in 1917 due to a stroke.

He died on June 14, 1921, at the age of 53. His friend, the painter Cornelis Van Dongen, lived above his studio for three years. His studio in Rotterdam was taken over by another friend, the painter Henri Minderop. Some of his works are present in the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, the Municipal Museum of The Hague, the Dordrecht Museum of Fine Arts, and the Drenthe Museum of Fine Arts. My remarks on this painting. One cannot help but think of Camille Pissarro's servant paintings when looking at this. Like Pissarro, Schildt was never indifferent to the fate of "common people," even through his studies of working women. Here, he shows it with a force of sympathy that was part of his social vision.

A simplicity that gives this old washerwoman a thoughtful, focused look, and a gravity that touches the spiritual. Another world, another perspective, another philosophy. A true beauty, and a profound sense given to the human condition in its immediate reality, in the heart of its time. In the vicinity of Impressionism, but more concerned with "realistic truth." Schildt does not fear the most ordinary subjects; he knew that it is often there that human gestures are most accurate. Also note the remarkable chromatic palette. > Possible hand delivery in Arras and the Lille Eurometropolis. > Free delivery in mainland France by Mondial Relay to a Mondial Relay pick-up point of your choice.
