No visible signature, perhaps a good attribution to be sought. It may have been relined or reinforced (the frame at the back does not seem original to me). It appears to have undergone restorations, on the right side there is a mass of material that is more matte than the rest of the painting, is it a detail that was intended to be hidden or a rather awkward restoration of the canvas?
In this case, the one seen behind would be just a reinforcement of the original canvas? The canvas shows deformations, either it has been heavily starched or it is mounted on a panel itself reinforced at the back by a canvas.
Despite these damages of time, this work has retained its great expressive value and beauty and deserves a good restoration. It may be from an Italian school, Saint Francis is sometimes depicted beardless. Ecstasy of Saint Francis, detail, Settignano, Villa i Tatti. However, one cannot help but also think of a Spanish school due to great analogies and similarities with the Saints Francis of Zurbaran, Luis de Morales, or even El Greco or Bartolomé Román. It is in a later period frame, heavy, in solid wood and stucco.
