Old Table. Tavern Scene. Xvii-xviiith Flemish School
Inside a tavern with a pipe smoker as its main character. Oil on muffled canvas on thick cardboard, strong. Ancient restoration (see photos) with traces under the canvas. Not very flat (see photos) but nothing serious. For a long time, gender painting reached its peak in the 17th century, with caravans and followers. Yet the themes it covers have also been addressed by artists from the north. Wedding scene, card players, tabbags, kermesse or tavern. This trend is one of the best known manifestations of Dutch painting. Protestantism, excluding all religious representations of churches, encouraged the development of this secular painting.
