On the back is a vintage cartouche with the inscription in French "Academic landscape; The bath of the nymphs disturbed by the satyrs" and attribution to Hippolyte Lebrun (a French painter working in Italy during the first half of the 19th century). The large scene is framed, like a set, from inside a rocky cave in the middle of a lush and shaded valley. A river flows to form water pools, in which a group of nymphs bath, disturbed by some satyrs who pursue and threaten them. The scene indeed has a very playful character, like a mischievous entertainment among the different characters. The characters, small compared to the landscape, are an additional element that reinforces its serene and pleasurable character; the reference to classical culture fits within the neoclassical period.
