Joseph of Lorraine, Joseph II (Vienna, March 13, 1741, February 20, 1790), eldest son of Marie Therese of Austria, he succeeded his father as emperor of the Romans in 1765, and became a corregant of the hereditary possessions of the Habsburgs; he inherited these in 1780 on the death of his mother, Empress Marie Therese. Joseph was a modern and reformist sovereign, although his reforms, which were too rapid, were neither understood nor accepted by his subjects. He allied himself with the Prussia and the Russian empire to dismember Poland (1772) and almost triggered a European war in 1778 by wanting to seize Bavaria.
He tried to influence the course of France's foreign policy by using his influence on his beloved wife-antoinette. He also tried to dismember the Ottoman Empire by sallying to the Russian empire.
