Painting by Maurice Martin: Landscape at the Lavoir in Nemours, Rare and Antique, 20th Century

  
Oil on canvas signed at the bottom left by Maurice Martin depicting a landscape at the washhouse in Nemours, countersigned and titled on the back. Maurice Martin was born in Mormant, where he spent his entire childhood. A talented schoolboy, he spent his free time drawing. His father had him work in the family painting business. The family then moved to Paris around 1910, and the young painter continued to work in his father's company until 1914, regretting not being able to study at the Beaux Arts. Called up in Lisieux for military preparation, he went to the front three months later, assigned to the infantry. Wounded in the left arm, he was mentioned three times in the regiment and his army corps at Verdun. Hospitalized in Lyon, he spent his recovery painting and drawing. In 1917, he returned to the regiment in Lisieux, a city he painted the old streets and the Rue aux fèves in particular.

From 1919 to 1922, he started his own business in the devastated regions, then in 1922, he returned to Paris where he married Marguerite Boisset with whom he had two children. Throughout his professional life, he dedicated his free time to frequenting painting workshops, including the Grande Chaumière and Pierre-Gaston Rigaud's workshop. He exhibited from 1932 at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d'automne, and especially at the Salon des Artistes français. He participated in the Salon de la marine and the Salon comparaison. In 1936, he received an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes français for Le Quai des laveuses à Moret, as well as the Prix Paul Liot and in 1942 a silver medal at the same salon.

In 1946, still at this Salon, he obtained the Gold Medal as well as the Corot Prize and the Rosa Bonheur Prize. In 1950, the year he fully dedicated himself to his art, he received the Morocco Prize, in 1960 that of Madagascar, and in 1969 that of Tunisia. Beyond these numerous awards, he also received scholarships which allowed him to work in the countries concerned in 1951 in Morocco, from December to Madagascar, and in 1969 in Tunisia. He died in Paris in 1978 after working until the end in fear of infirmity that would prevent him from expressing himself pictorially.
