Antique 19th-Century Painting, Courtship Scene by the Water, Signed Oil on Canvas

Charming late 19th-century oil painting on canvas depicting a “Scene of Courtship.” The work portrays an elegant couple in 18th-century dress (Louis XV style), engaged in affectionate conversation beside a body of water. The painting is rich in colour, particularly the vivid red of the gentleman’s attire, which contrasts with the golden yellow of the lady’s gown. The scene exudes romance and lightness, reflecting the taste for 18th-century themes during the French Third Republic.
Date: Dated 1880 beside the signature.
Subject: Courtship scene / Romanticism.

Canvas dimensions: 50 x 60 cm (76 x 67 cm including the frame).
Frame: Superb period frame in wood and gilded stucco, decorated with acanthus leaves (included with the painting).

Canvas condition: Evidence of old restorations is visible on the reverse, including reinforcing patches. Some cracking and small, localised areas of paint loss are present (see detail photos), which is normal for a work over 120 years old.

Frame condition: Very attractive overall, with minor losses or wear to the gilding in places, enhancing its authentic period character.
